Having just returned from Japan, I am not going to be able to make the Maine Japanese Woodworking Festival July 24-26th (This weekend). It's funny to realize Japan is much closer to Hawaii than Maine. I will miss seeing everyone. But I did donate a Funahiro blue steel #1 Kanna (Genshin) as a prize for the planing contest.
Funatsu Yūji, the third generation Funahiro, passed away earlier this year. So I thought it appropriate to give a plane away in his name to someone who knows how to plane and sharpen.
Jason will also be handing out Paklan discount codes to attendees who aren’t already supporters. This is a fine way to celebrate the announcement that I’ll start selling most of my tools through the newsletter, too.
The festival is in its 4th year under Jason, and the schedule is ripe with interesting topics. I’m particularly sad I won’t be able to learn how to make a copper roof (Hiroshi Awano), get deeper into plastering (Liz Johndrow) or learn about fusuma door construction (Paul Tuller). Happily, I see a joinery speed competition, which I would love to participate in.
Then there are all the programs on actual construction, like those by Andrea Carson and Koji Toda of the Kominka Collective and Adam Miller of Kominka North America. Check out the rest of the speakers and schedule here, and if you plan on going, here’s a link to the sign up page.
