For years, I’ve wondered how to join bamboo to wood. Working on the sukiya fence project, we had a chance. Yama and I guessed maybe 5 people or so know how to do it like this in the United States.
First, we finished general joinery and scribing of the sugi pieces that the bamboo would join to. This work in and of itself is not insignificant, so the stakes already become higher than average in the next few steps.

Bamboo is not round, so the mortise has to be scribed to match its natural shape. First, we mark centers on the wood, and a “+” to extend the center lines.
